Richard
Peter Young, chartered accountant by
qualification, is the Managing Director
of Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago
Limited and its wholly owned
subsidiaries Scotiatrust and Merchant
Bank Trinidad and Tobago Limited and
ScotiaLife Trinidad and Tobago Limited..
Mr. Young completed the professional
examinations of the Association of
Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
in June 1971 at the age of 21, making
him one of the youngest Trinidadians to
do so at the time.
At the age of 29, Mr. Young was admitted
to partnership, again making him one of
the youngest partners in the
international world of Price Waterhouse.
After spending over 18 years as a
chartered accountant, he left Price
Waterhouse and joined NEM (West Indies)
Insurance Limited and became its
Managing Director in 1992. In 1995 he
left the world of insurance and joined
the banking industry, becoming
Scotiabank’s Managing Director in 1997.
Mr. Young has served on the Council of
the Institute of Chartered Accountants
of Trinidad & Tobago and was its
President during 1986 to 1988. He
chaired a cabinet appointed committee
addressing the challenges and impacts of
Y2K on the private sector and was a
member of the National Y2K Coordinating
Committee representing the Financial
Services sector to ensure a smooth
transition into the year 2000.
Mr. Young became a Director of the
Trinidad & Tobago Stock Exchange in 1998
and its Chairman in May 1999 until 2001,
and continued to serve as a Director
until May 2003. He has also served as
President of the Bankers’ Association of
Trinidad & Tobago from August 2002 until
2004.
He has been Chairman of Youth Business
Trinidad & Tobago since its
incorporation in January 2001.
Mr. Young is married to Prescilla for
over 35 years and is the proud father of
three children (Stuart, Angus &
Melissa).
