Caribbean Accountants Re-elect Garth Kiddoe as President
June 7, 2006


The Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean, at its Annual General Meeting held in Barbados on June 7 th elected Mr. L. Garth Kiddoe, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management at the University of Technology, Jamaica as its President for a second year.

Other persons elected to serve for the 2006 – 2007 administrative year were:
•  Angela Lee Loy, Vice President,– Trinidad & Tobago representative
•  Harryram Parmesar, Secretary – Guyana representative
•  Brian Robinson – Treasurer
•  Joan Brathwaite, Director – Barbados
•  Giacomo Sanchez, Director - Belize
•  Anthony Atkinson, Director – Eastern Caribbean

The 24th Annual Caribbean Conference of Accountants was held at the Hilton in Barbados from June 8 th to 10th. In addressing the conference, Mr Kiddoe highlighted some of the ICAC's key accomplishments and plans:

Accomplishments

•  Strategic refocusing of the Institute

•  Harmonization of accountancy qualifications and agreement on reciprocity of membership between member institutes

•  Adoption of recommendations to facilitate Regional Practice Monitoring

Plans

•  Strengthening International and regional relationships

•  Regional IDB project to strengthen the accountancy profession in the region

•  Implementation of a Practice Monitoring Programme

•  Support for smaller institutes

The Rt. Hon. Owen Arthur, Prime Minister of Barbados, gave the feature address. He is also the lead head of Government with responsibility for the Caribbean Single Market and Economy ( CSME) and gave an update on developments pursuant to its implementation.

The Conference theme “Sharpening the Edge” , attracted over 400 delegates and speakers from all across the world. Speakers included Mr. Graham Ward, President of The International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) , Mr. Dennis Yeates, President of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Mr. Anthony Ariganello, President of the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA).

Technical presentations focused on issues such as: Practice Monitoring, Harmonizing our Currency, Media and Information Management, Is the Bottom Line the Best Measure for Performance, Accounting Standards for SME's, Business and Professional Ethics and Building a Caribbean Investment Culture.

The ICAC 25th Annual Conference of Accountants was held at the Marriot Resort, St Kitts, from June 28 -30, 2007.
